Moving Scams
Moving can cost thousands of dollars. Whether it is from a flier, through the phonebook or on the Internet, it is easy to find a mover. But be careful of the mover you choose. Recently moving scams have become more frequent as individuals and companies look to illegally profit from the amount of money involved. Consumers have literally faced extortion from movers that will not deliver their items unless they pay more money.
Typically, consumers can get a quote from a moving company that estimates the cost of the move. Some moving companies require significant deposits from customers to cover their costs. Others may lowball moving expenses to lure customers and get business. They may not even be a moving company but instead a broker that sells moving jobs. If you get a variety of moving quotes and one is much lower than others received, it may not always be the best choice.
Some companies may claim the amount of goods moved weighed significantly more that the estimated amount and as a result charge significantly more money. They may not deliver the owners personal items until additional payment is received. Others people find that they have valuable personal items missing such as computers and other electronic devices.
Consumers typically do not have the tools to accurately measure the weight of all their personal belongings moved. As a result, it can be difficult to prove or disprove the true weight of the items. Also know if the estimate you received from the moving company is binding or non-binding, they come in both forms.
Consumers need to carefully research moving companies before entering into an agreement. Moving companies should be licensed. Check with the Better Business Bureau or State Attorney General’s office regarding the number of complaints for prospective moving companies. Talk to friends and family; word of mouth is often a good source for a reputable company.
Internet reviews can also be a good source of customer feedback. However, it can be difficult to know if the reviewer is actually impartial and does not have an interest in steering people to one particular moving company. Look at a variety of review sites and do your homework. Purchasing moving insurance can also be a good idea.
