Preparing For A College Move In

By Neil On September 28th, 2010

Any move involves transition. This is truer than ever when it is your first move out of the house and into college. While this can be a bittersweet time for both parents and child, there are steps to take to prepare for a college move in that can make the transition much easier. Below are five tips to help with a move into a college dorm environment:

1. Take advantage of orientation and visitation opportunities to get an idea of what dorm you will be living in, what the room contains, and the room configuration. This will allow you to start to get comfortable with the environment and help you decide what you need for the room.
2. Plan what you need to bring in advance. Make a list of the necessary items. Since you may only be living in the room for about nine month, remember that you do not need to take every CD, book, and DVD you own. Pick out the things you will really need for school and to furnish your room. Remember space can be very limited in a dorm room.
3. Purchase the necessary moving supplies. Moving boxes or suitcases are the easiest way to transport items. Pack essential items such as a screwdriver, hammer, flashlight, scissors, light bulbs, batteries, extension cords and tape. Also bring basic cleaning supplies such as dust rags, keyboard cleaner, glass cleaner, and paper towels. Remember to bring flip-flops if you will be using a community shower!
4. Contact your roommate in advance. This will allow you to introduce yourself and find out if there any items such as a television, refrigerator, or other electronics that you may share. You may also want to discuss how to divide the room space and bed preference.
5. Confirm your assignment move in date and move as early as possible. The date differs based upon school schedules, specific dorms or class status. This will allow you to beat the rush and get settled prior to the first day of school. This also allows time for you to buy additional needed items and stock up a refrigerator if you will be preparing your own meals or for snacks.

Starting college is an anxious, exciting time. These tips can help you prepare for a college move in and make the transition easier, getting you off to a good start. The last thing you want is to be moving in at the last minute right before classes start. Good luck and happy moving!
